What is Variable Data Printing?

Variable data printing is a form of digital printing which permits the insertion of variable designs – text and graphics – into a print run. This form of printing is high paced and enables varied information to be printed without adjusting the press and therefore slowing down the printing process.

What are the main plateless digital printing technologies?

  • Digital press
  • Ink jet
  • Direct thermal
  • Thermal transfer
  • Thermal dye sublimation

For example, on the HP Indigo machine each image is first transferred onto a rubber blanket where the liquid ink becomes tacky. In the reel-fed process each colour is added to the hot blanket in turn and the finished image is transferred to the substrate complete. The sheet-fed process prints each colour from the blanket to the substrate individually.

What are the benefits of variable data printing?

Due to the high-speed, incredible quality and design associated with variable data printing you can benefit from a whole host of aspects, including:

  • Change returns address or phone number – for businesses who have multiple offices and/or contact information, variable data printing allows large volume data printing to be tailored/adjusted during the process to meet unique customers requirements. This maximises press runs and minimises downtime as there’s no requirement to adjust graphics assigned to print jobs during the print run.
  • Include unique QR codes – variable data printing which contains unique codes can be printed on a single printer run without adjusting graphics.
  • Personalisation & profitability – With the power of variable data printing, you can benefit from product personalisation and security applications, such as serialised product numbering, individualised tickets and game pieces. You can also benefit from track and trace and asset protection which maximises business profitability.
  • Small volumes – Utilising variable data printing techniques allows you to also benefit from customisation from printing smaller volumes, as and when required.
