Permanent adhesives in their simplest form are adhesives which when applied to a surface, will provide strong adhesion to the substrate. These types of adhesives are generally difficult to remove without damaging the label construction. The actual strength of the bond depends on the nature of the substrate and the conditions under which the self-adhesive product is applied, additional adhesion will build up over time and effectiveness of a bond can show a marked difference over prolonged periods.

Why Choose Permanent Adhesive Label Constructions?

The rationale for customers choosing permanent adhesives relate to the requirement of the application, for example, being applied for a prolonged period of time and being able to withstand varying conditions. Think about products with short lifespans, such as promotional labels or FMCG labels which are not required to stay for prolonged periods of time.

The demand for permanent adhesive labels is high as a large majority of products need permanent pressure sensitive labels which can last for years, this is particularly true for any products which are exposed to weathering conditions or for safety purposes – such as pharmaceutical or industrial applications. These products include key safety information including, but not limited to - usage, dosage, disposal, recycling, hazard severity, chemical name and warnings such as highly flammable.

In fact, permanent adhesive labels also come in more abrasive formats in which they are also weatherproof. For instance, a range of our materials are approved under the BS5609 Section Two standard which is the British Standard for pressure-sensitive labels used for marine applications.

The BS5609 testing procedure involves a self-adhesive label being placed on a drum and exposed to salt water at mid-tide for a 3 month period. This standard is referred to when consumers require an extremely durable label or compliance for self-adhesive drum labels needing certification with the below:

  • Merchant Shipping Regulations
  • International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG)
  • Globally Harmonized System of Classification (GHS) standards

At Smith & McLaurin we have a range of constructions which pass BS5609 Section Two:
