Products/Polyethylene Films
Polyethylene is an environment-friendly PVC substitute and when disposed of by incineration merely releases carbon dioxide and water. Self-adhesive PE labels can be readily recycled with polyethylene containers.
The two main types of PE face materials that apply to label production are:
Low or Medium Density Polyethylene (LDPE) is transparent, has good resistance tear and low stiffness. Corona-treated grades are used for squeezable and irregular –shaped containers. LDPE is also widely used for tape and packaging film, although medium density films are more likely to be used for labels.
High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) has high stiffness, poor resistance but g barrier properties. Many types of plastic bottles and tubs are made with HDPE, although PET is challenging this material in certain beverage markets.
PE films are made in high-gloss white, super-white, matt white, transparent and metalized grades. They offer good resistance to water, chemicals and UV light, so are suitable for cosmetics, toiletry and household products, food and outdoor applications. Being free of plasticizers, PE’s dimensional stability is good but it can easily be stretched. Minimal shrinkage avoids adhesive edge residues. It also has a high exterior tear resistance and is flexible enough to allow a printed label to resist creasing on squeezable products.
